I’m SJF, a composer and sound artist living in Kyoto, Japan. These letters are for wanderers and creators seeking the quieter side of life; stories, soundscapes, and moments of slow beauty. For those feeling burned out by the modern world and drawn to traditional craftsmanship, ambient music, and mindful internet spaces. If that’s you, you’re welcome here.

What happens when we slow down and pay attention to what we hear, instead of just what we see? What if, just for a moment, we didn't reach for a camera, but tuned our ears to the hidden sounds of a place?
Recently, I walked the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto with a field recorder in an attempt to answer this question. This is the first in a series that aims to help people hear a side of Kyoto that might otherwise be missed. Even as some corners of this city grow crowded, there is still peace waiting to be discovered.
If you're drawn to experiencing Kyoto in this way, you're warmly invited to join me. I am curating intimate, slow sound walks. Just two guests at a time. I believe there's beauty to be found in the storied temples and the peaceful backstreets. Let's uncover it together.
We'll move through the city with field recorders, which I'll provide, seeking the everyday beauty that most travellers miss. Afterwards, I'll weave your recorded sounds into a unique soundscape. A personal memento of your time in Kyoto.
I've been guiding sound walks and creating field recordings internationally for nearly two decades. My path has brought me from ambient music composition to installations and collaborations with artists, always asking the question: how does the world sound, when we truly listen?
If you would like to join a future walk, or know someone who would, please reach out to kyotoinsound@gmail.com or share this video.
Spaces are limited, in the spirit of presence.
This is an invitation to slow down;
an escape from screen-fatigue;
a chance to connect with Kyoto in a unique way.
Thank you for listening with me.

Oh, this is beautiful. It's like a sonic love letter to everything I love about field recording. I look (listen?) forward to what comes next!
I love shimogamo shrine too!
